All About It’s a Big Big World

It's a Big Big World
On Monday, January 2nd PBS Kids will debut a new show titled It’s a Big Big World. The show takes place in The World Tree where a number of animals native to the rainforest make their homes. The show uses a mix of puppetry, animatronics, and computer animation called Shadowmation. The educational goals include science and geography. My initial impression after seeing the show is Bear in the Big Blue House meets Go Diego Go with a little Bill Nye. The flow of the show, and the characters call to mind “Bear.” But the setting, and emphasis on problem solving resemble Diego with a curriculum that would make The Science Guy proud.

The test audience (my almost 5 year old son, and 2 1/2 year old daughter) and I watched the first episode, “Not Found Here.” The show began with Snook waking up and talking to the viewers. My son was instantly engaged, laughing and answering the questions that Snook posed.

Smooch and Winslow, a pair of marmosets come looking to Snook for help. The primates are looking for a friend they had recently met named Wartz. Unfortunately Smooch and Winslow didn’t remember very much about Wartz, or where they could find him. Snook, being the helpful sloth that he is, agrees to help track down Wartz. Because they have very little information to work with, Snook suggests that they find all the places Wartz isn’t so that eventually they find the one place he is – essentially the scientific method.

Along the way the trio check with the other inhabitants of The World Tree. Here we meet the rest of the characters. First they visit Burdette, who I believe is a macaw and is a little bit bossy. Next they stop and see a slightly neurotic, ant-obsessed anteater named Bob. Other friends along the way include a monkey named Oko who seems to be Mr Miyagi with a little bit of Shaggy thrown in, a fish named Ick, and a wise old turtle named Madge.

As the show progresses Smooch and Winslow remember a little bit more about Wartz. Wartz was green, slimy, had a tail, and had little legs. Eventually we find out that Wartz was a tadpole who has since changed into a red-eyed tree frog. Hence, some of the confusion. At the same time the audience learns about metamorphosis. After the episode ended I quizzed my kids about the show. My son’s take away was that Wartz changed from a tadpole to a frog (although he couldn’t remember the word metamorphosis) so the show met it’s educational goal on that front.

The show featured several songs, my favorite being “Get Up” which basically started the show. It was upbeat, catchy, and in a week or so I envision myself walking around the house humming it. Another song, The Curve of the World featured a “world beat” and was decent. Otherwise, I wasn’t overly impressed with the music and didn’t care much for the closing song.

Overall impressions of the show were quite favorable. My son was old enough to get the educational components, and the characters and Shadowmation were vibrant enough to keep my daughter engaged. As a parent, I was more than satisfied with the educational aspects of the show. And just as importantly the show easily passed the “not annoying” test.

Snook definitely calls to mind Bear. The two share many character traits. This shouldn’t surprise as both shows were created by Mitchell Kriegman. The “Bear” influence extends to the talent as well, where several of the puppeteers worked on both shows. Peter Linz, who does Snook, also voiced Tutter and Pip on Bear as well as Winnie the Pooh and Ploka Dots from Blue’s Room.

PBS has initially ordered 40 episodes of It’s a Big Big World with 15 set to air between now and April 4th. Three new episodes will be shown the week of January 2nd, with an additional 3 episodes the week of January 9th. Air times will vary so check your local listings at PBS.org.

Thank you so much for this show. My 5 month old granddaughter just loves this show. She makes all kinds of sounds when she watches it. She has a low thyroid and the doctor said for us to turn on shows that will keep her attention for stimulation. Thank you so much for your great show. Zoey and I will continue to watch it every day. Sesame Street is her second favorite. It has helped her to respond in so many ways. We can now see improvment every day. Thanks again!

My 15 month old has loved this show since we found it when he was about 6 months old! We love it! I really wish you could find “stuff” on these characters. He loves the songs and snook! This show beats elmo, barney and anything else on the market right now! I hope its popularity keeps going!

My daughter is 11 months old and absolutely loves this show. Just watching her give snook “five” is awesome, she even blows him kisses as soon as the show ends. Her first birthday is in december and I would love to have a “its a big big world” theme party for her. I have checked the PBS.org site and they have nothing for sale. There is no place else that sells anything with “its a big big world. I did write them to see if they had plans to make merchandise. No reply as of yet. Maybe if enough people wrote to them, they would consider putting out the merchandise. The site is http://www.pbs.org and just look for the link to contact.

I am also looking for “It’s a Big, Big World” for my grandson, who just turned 12 months. I am disappointed that there is not any merchandise (i.e. DVDs or stuffed animals). My grandson loves this program. Please listen to the consumers!

Thank you!

Well, I am looking for the music. I have a 10 month old boy who stops everything when he hears snook. Then he looks at the tv and smile from ear to ear. I would like to get my hands on Snook that sings and a full cd. The music is great and shows are great. Both of us enjoy watching Snook.

One other thing, the show is so good and all the little one’s love it, it will be taken of the air. They have blue’s clues, elmo, and everything else but why don’t you give us Snook?

I found a press release online from June of ‘06 indicating that fisher-price got the licensing rights for it’s a big, big world and will develop a series of toys and plush, which will be available in the Fall of 2007. I too have been searching for toys as my 6 month old daughter loves this show! The release is at http://news.awn.com/index.php?ltype=cat&category1=Licensing&newsitem_no=17171. Hopefully this will happen as I haven’t found any other info on the plans. Amazon is also selling two it’s a big, big world DVDs. They are currently selling pre-orders but the DVDs are scheduled to be released 1/30/07.

My daughter is 11 months old and she love the show, every day she watch after her lunch and she now that is coming. She race her arm to give five to Snook

23 Lawrence Anthony 02.08.07 at 1:31 pm

My two year old twins have been watching this show since it first came out. They love giving Snook five at the end of the show and wave and say bye to him. It’s so cute that I have recorded it! I even sing the song to them every so now and then and they always give me five! I’ve been looking for a toy Snook for a long time and found the same release Stella posted sometime back in October. I did some further research today and called Fisher Price and I was told that Snook is on a Line List for 2007 meaning that a Snook product “might” be released in 2007. Please call Fisher Price and voice your opinion regarding Snook at 800-432-5437. I hope they keep the show on and they come out with a Snook plush animal. Snook would make a great appearance for a kid birthday party! Good luck!

THERE IS DVDS OF THE SHOW OUT. I FINALLY FOUND THEM AT TARGET AND WAS HAPPY TO SEE TWO MORE COMING OUT IN MAY 2007. THANK GOD BECAUSE MY DVR WAS FULL OF ALL THE EPISODES. MY DAUGHTER LOVES THIS SHOW. SHE IS ONE YEAR OLD AND HAS BEEN WATCHING THIS SINCE SHE WAS ABOUT 6 MONTHS. IT’S THE ONLY SHOW SHE WATCHES FROM BEGINNING TO END, AS SOON AS SHE HER IT SHE RUNS FROM THE OTHER ROOM. I HOPE THIS HELPS ALL.

My daughter LOVES this show. Everytime it comes on no matter what she is doing or what she is playing with she stops and just watches in amazement. I know there are DVD’s out but I think she would enjoy playing with animals from the show. I have looked and looked and can’t seem to find any. So I think it would be a good idea if they are already not in the process of making them, to make toys from the show. It really teaches her so many wonderful things and she LOVES the songs especially they end song. Thanks so much for having a wonderful show like this on for her to learn and grow from. Hope this show continues to flurish. Thanks!

I too have been searching for merchandise for this show. My 16 month old adores it! In a recent trip to Toys R Us, I found some toys!!! I was so excited. They are action figures in packs of 2. There were 3 packs and the boxes indicated there was also a world tree but I could not find that. During an online search I found a link to preorder these, it said the release date was July 2007. They also had one DVD at Toys R Us.

Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! hgtxsneofq

The DVDs can be found at Target and/or Best Buy. My son is 15 months old and has been dancing to the opening & closing songs since he was an infant. His adoration for Snook has to be unnatural! ;-) The PBS website has an adorable series of pages dedicated to the show, complete with interactive games and coloring page printouts. We love playing the music videos over, and over, and over… and over. I’m now in a desperate search for Snook and It’s A Big, Big World Memorabilia in an attempt to prepare for his second birthday next March. Any suggestions?

Its so nice to read messages from so many parents whose children love this series. My little Ren has loved Snook since about 2 weeks old. I kid you not- she would smile and giggle when Snook would sing. Now at 8 months old she is enamoured of Snook and I am going nuts looking for toys. C’mon folks, how many parents need to message about the same thing to get a few singing Snook Plush made. Personally I want the singing BOB plush too. I already called Fisher Price and the Gentleman on the phone couldn’t find any information for upcoming toys sigh. Anyone else have more info- like online links??
Thanks,
Anna M.
