If you’ve ever wondered what exactly Uniqua from The Backyardigans is, Blogging Baby has the answer. Uniqua is unique and doesn’t represent an actual animal.

But she’s … nothing. According to creator Janice Burgess, Uniqua is just her. “Uniqua is her name, and also her species – with her purple skin, pink spots, and dainty antennae, she doesn’t look like any other creature on the planet.”

I was insisting to my mother that uniqua was an alien, she told me to look it up. I did and now I know, and I know im wrong hahaha. My son insists thought that she is an alien. Im glad someone was able to tell us. Thanks!!

  7. Mary Says:

I thought an ant at first then I thought maybe an alien…and the other day I asked my friend who’s daughter loves the show and she said she didn’t think she was anything…so she was right!

  8. carolyn Says:

I have been wondering that for a long time… i thought she was an alien!she does kinda resemble one!LOL

  9. mandy Says:

My husband and I have been watching this show since the beginning and we thought Uniqua might be either a salamander or a chameleon (because her clothes match her skin and she has antennae). I guess she is unique, but I am still convinced she is modeled on a salamander . . .

  10. Melonie Says:

OH man it is SOOO good to know finally what she is. I watch this show with my daughter every day and I thought she was an alien. all my friends said ant!! It is GREAT to know and now i can go tell everyone she is nothing!

  11. Art Says:

One of those things where you say, ” I could have had a V-8″ because after getting the explanation it’s so obvious.

  12. oliver Says:

ya me and my family were wondering what she was…we thought she may be a ladybug(hense the dots and attennae) but ya i unno…

  13. Danielle Says:

My husband and I where trying to figure this out for a while. We settled on an ant yesterday.

  14. Darrius Says:

I thought Uniqua was a pink ladybug w/ overalls. That sounds a little far fetched but so is a yellow hippo (Tasha) lol. My daughters love the show. Janice Burgess you are a genius.

  15. Leah Says:

I alo thought she was a pink ladybug… I’m glad to know what she is. My two year old is hipnotized by the show, and I must say I enjoy it too. Better than Bananas in Pajamas.

  16. jessie Says:

My kids and I kept going back and forth about what she was. They said a pig, I thought she was an aardvark. My one year old loves the show.

  17. Shawn Says:

Janice Burgess is a cop-out. This is the type of inconsistency in kid’s television that drives me crazy. Yes the song lyrics are always entertaining and the stories fairly engaging…but you’ve got four definable animal characters and one that’s clearly the result of “creative-block.” Most people’s guesses have been better than the unique creature concept that has been offered up. It would be one thing if Uniqua was the focal point of the show, or had a special ability, etc. As it is, I think someone just got lazy…. I do like the songs however. Backyardigans is no Sesame Street.

  18. Bobbie Says:

My girls asked me what she was and I thought she looked like an Ant. I told them I would find out and I did. Thanks. The internet is a wonderful thing for all those questions kids think up. LOL.

  19. Jakesixx Says:

It was bugging my wife and I just today. It was nice to find this Blog. I do think Shawn should calm down a tad. Janice was clearly creating a character to project her own desires for herself. She says as much in an interview.

  20. MommyBear Says:

My fiance is convenienced that Uniqua is an Alien CockRoach. He is from Brooklyn and says he knows one when he sees one…lol. Our 4 yr old loves the BackYardigans and the fact that Tasha has red shoes like she does!

  21. jolia Says:

I think she was a salamander

  22. Giovana Says:

My daughter loves the Backyardigans and so do I… And as much as I wondered what Uniqua was, I never brought it up with my daughter because the discussion would go on and on… Now we can settle for “She’s a nothing”.
And Shawn, take it easy. Backyardigans is the best show on TV in the past few years and thank God for it! Completely original, extremely amusing and educational. I can’t say one bad word about it.

  23. leona Says:

thank god i thought she was an alian or a pink whale shark, i told my daughter that she was nothin and she started crying she told me that i runed the show for her then i told her she can call it what ever she wants and she said yah i can call t a hippy bug and stsrted singing the backyardigans.

  24. cuti-pie Says:

I’m so glad I finally know what she’s not…I guess I should say! lol..I’ve been wondering for the longest and I read somewhere they said she was a bug of some sort..

  25. cuti-pie Says:

I thought she was an ant also…lol

  26. dusti Says:

WHA? WONDER PETS? I can’t stand a duck with a speech impediment. It drives me nuts. And the music is so UNORIGINAL! THere is more talent in ONE of the Backyardigan’s pinky, then the ALL of the Wonderpets and their stupid voices. Sorry, no offense, I’m just really passionate about this!

  27. Rose Says:

I always thought that she was an ant put I would not use the frase “she is nothing…” I think she is one of the principals in the story. To prove that she appears in more episodes than Tasha and Austin.

  28. Rose Says:

  29. Mickimohojo Says:

All of the above answers are wrong. Uniqua spelled backwards is Auqinu! Coincidence? A “Auqinu” is an ancient monster in which Freddy Kruger is based. If you allow our children to watch backyardagains their dreams will be haunted, and eventually Auqinu will eat their brains from the inside out.

Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! zqmdqpqeytnfd

  31. Josalon Says:

My mom said that that was what she was. i wasn’t sure cause my 6 mo. old son watches it every morning. tahnks. now i know what she is. and for that person who said it will eat the chrildren’s brain inside out, u should find a hobby.

  32. Sean Says:

Oh thank god. My wife and all the other parents were wondering the same thing everybody else was. I had no idea what she was.

  33. steve Says:

Well I really understand the fact that they left one something that no one could figure out, one because it lets kids know that no matter what or where someone is from they are acceptable to be with, even if you have no clue where they are from.

  34. Heather Says:

Wow! My children thought she was a butterfly without wings. The mystery is over!! My four year absolutely LOVES the Backyardigans. She can sing almost every song from both of the music cd’s. I think the Backyardigans encourages her creativity!! What a WONDERFUL show!!

  35. Heather Rego Says:

My social studies teacher has a daughter and he had my class do a test to find out what Uniqua was. But we all got it wrong and now i know why.

  36. Nicole Says:

While I and my daughter love this show, I was really hoping Uniqua was an actual animal so I could tell my daughter and try to continually educate her. But we will keep watching. Great show and we LOVE all of the music and dancing. My daughter especially loves it and she’s only 10 months old!

  37. amytwin1142 Says:

That answer left me feeling empty and flat. There are a million animals in the world and you had to make one up?! what is this!?

  38. Rita Says:

Amytwin1142… have to agree. A “unique” nothingness… let’s try explaining that to our kids….

  39. cheryl Says:

count us in with salamander. LOL.

Thanks. My 5 year old asked me today, so I read him the post and we ended up talking about what makes her special.

  42. Quinn Says:

I thought she was a lady bug with pink and purple spots, but then I thought she’s special look at her name. :)

  43. Stephanie Says:

We all love Backyardigans in my house…and just because you cant explain something doesn’t make it wrong.our kids love the fact she is nothing makes her special

  44. Kimberly Says:

My 4 year old decided a year ago that she was a salamander. He loves that show but also watches Animal planet quite frequently. He also says Austin is a Kangaroo…. but I think someone said it was a coyote?

  45. maggie Says:

I think Uniqua is an imaginary friend!!

  46. Mea Says:

Honestly, I didn’t care too much what she was…I LOVE THE SHOW!!! Oh yeah, and my 5 kids do too. My husband isn’t opposed to it either.

I figure if any kids (or parents for that matter) have issues with a “lack” of species for Uniqua, they can always let their kids research animals until they find one they are happy with. That allows an opportunity to teach them about many different animals as well.

And if they aren’t interested in going through that much trouble, they can always teach their children that new species of animals are STILL being discovered, and we have yet to discover around 3/4 of our ocean creatures. So why so difficult to accept a Uniqua as a species?

Did I mention I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!

  47. LJW Says:

Has anyone ever seen Henriatta from the noggin commercials? The mole who hangs out with the moose and Zee? Uniqua kind of looks like her. With the ears (antennae) and tail.

I kind of agree with Shawn who says that just making her a “nothing” is inconsistent, when the other characters are totally recognizable. My child who watches the show, isn’t old enough to ask yet, but when she does, I want to give her a concrete answer, something better than, “Oh she’s nothing.”

  48. Mommy of two Says:

my husband said this morning it was an ant or a beetle and was joking and said her name was uniqua so she was unique!! guess i was right.

  49. doglover922 Says:

I am not kidding, but i have a friend named Uniqua, she is 14 yrs old, it is driving her crazy how janice thought of the name Uniqua, because she has never heard it before! lol! if anyone has the answer to my question, please answer, so i can tell her, or she can come to this website! lol! thank you!

  50. nikkia Says:

I thought she was either an ant or exactly as her name describes her, unique! My daughter loves the show we all do!
