Buddy Guy and Jack

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

It appears that Buddy Guy found out what fans of Jack’s Big Music Show have known for awhile, the show is funny and fun.

The blues legend says he had a good time guesting on Monday’s edition of “Jack’s Big Music Show,” a music-themed program on cable’s kid-centric Noggin channel, but he had to work on not giggling at the puppets’ antics during shooting. “I don’t know how they stop from laughing,” Guy said of the show’s puppeteers. “I said, I got to get used to this.”

The episode is set to air Monday, February 6th on Noggin.

The new season of Franklin

Monday, December 26th, 2005

As I’ve mentioned previously Noggin will begin airing a sixth season of Franklin on New Year’s Day. While Franklin doesn’t generate the kind of excitement that Little Einsteins and Dora the Explorer do in our house, the kids seem to enjoy it. As a parent, it’s one of my favorite shows because Franklin is such a realistic role model (realistic in his behavior, not in the fact that turtles can talk).

What I most appreciate about Franklin, is that he isn’t perfect. He makes mistakes, and struggles with friendship and relationships. Yet, he usually is able to resolve his problems for himself, with a little help from friends and parents. I see my my (nearly) 5 year old son experiencing many of the same dilemmas. Whether it is his interactions with friends, or dealing with having a little sister I hope my son is learning something while we watch.

Another reason why we like Franklin is that it encourages reading. Because the shows are based on stories by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark we can experience the stories in both book and tv form. When we head to the library we always come home with at least one Franklin book. While using TV to promote reading may call into my parenting skills, at least it gets them reading.

Which brings us to the new episodes. The premiere episode of the sixth seasons features two stories, Hockey Fan Franklin and Mother Hen Franklin.

In Hockey Fan Franklin, Franklin enters a contest where he writes a letter about why he loves hockey. He ends up winning the contest, and the prize is getting to play hockey with his hero Bill Buffalo in front of the whole town. The episode is full of good messages. First, Franklin’s winning letter is about teamwork. Second, it shows that it is okay to be nervous in front of a crowd. A lot of kids (and adults) will be able to identify what Franklin is going through when he’s on the ice and too nervous to skate. With the crowd and pressure, Franklin ends up struggling despite being a pretty good hockey player. They will also relate with the disappointment Franklin experiences when despite a lot of practice, things went awry.

Of course there is a happy ending where Franklin’s friends cheer him up by playing hockey with him. What Franklin didn’t know was that his friends had invited Bill Buffalo to come watch. Bill Buffalo is impressed and ends up playing with the kids.

In Mother Hen Franklin, Franklin becomes over protective when Harriet gets hurt on his watch. While my kids enjoyed the episode, I don’t think they took as much away.

Franklin has aired for 5 seasons, each with 13 episodes. The show’s producer, Nelvana, has a complete episode guide available.

Hockey Fan Franklin/Mother Hen Franklin will air January 1st at 10:00am. It will be immediately followed by another new episode and 5 more hours of Franklin. Episodes from season 6 will air throughout next week at 10:00am.

Noggin’s New Show: The Upside Down Show

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Noggin has purchased 13 episodes of The Upside Down Show. The new live-action show was developed by The Sesame Workshop and features the Austrailian comedy duo The Umbilical Brothers.

Each episode begins as the brothers hand an imaginary remote control to the viewers at home so they can “control” the duo’s physical motion by fast forwarding, rewinding or pausing their movement. Breaking “the fourth wall” of the television set, the brothers encourage their audience to participate in their antics and accompany them on their excursions. Every week, the duo embarks on a journey to explore new worlds as well as everyday destinations like the laundromat, the airport or the movies. But Shane and David need help from their friends and viewers at home. Along the way, they take detours through magical doors in their apartment which allow them to discover exciting new places. Viewers never know what might materialize behind one of the doors. They may land in the Very Hairy Room, the Wind Room or even in the Puppy Room!

The show is scheduled to air in fall 2006.

Movin’ the music

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

It appears that Dan Zanes will be moving his musical reportoire from Noggin to Playhouse Disney. This appeared in an article in today’s New York Times:

Before taking on a life of their own, the videos were shot for “Jack’s Big Music Show,” a puppet-driven program that had its premiere last month and currently features videos by Ms. Berkner, the Dirty Sock Funtime Band and Milkshake - though not by Mr. Zanes, who now has a deal with Playhouse Disney to produce his own music show.

The article wasn’t just focusing on Zanes, but talked about the general popularity of preschool pop music that was spearheaded by Noggin’s Move to the Music.

While my kids love the Laurie Berkner music, and are fans of Jack’s Big Music Show, Dan Zanes never really seemed to click with them.

It will be interesting to see if Playhouse Disney will continue on with The Wiggles, or if they are planning to use Zanes as a replacement.

Show Profile: Jack’s Big Music Show

Friday, October 14th, 2005

After about of month of hype, Noggin launched Jack’s Big Music Show on September 12th. The show became the highest rated premiere in the station’s history.

The show’s goals are:

N O G G I N: For Parents: Shows: Jack’s Big Music Show: “The mission of Jacks Big Music Show is to expose and foster an appreciation of music. Music and musical instruments help children expand their universe and develop memory, language, literacy and reasoning skills as well as the cognitive, social and motor skills that are needed to excel in school. In Jacks clubhouse, music is pure joyno expectations and no right or wrong way, just music for musics sake. Or in Jacks words, super swell!”

As for the show itself, it is focused around 3 puppets: Jack, his friend Mary, and

his dog Mel. The show takes place in Jack’s clubhouse where he and his friends play a wide variety of music. The educational theme in the episodes I’ve seen seem to focus on social skills - and of course music and dancing. In addition to the action in the clubhouse, there are also music videos from various performers including Laurie Berkner.

The performers for the main puppet characters all have substantial Sesame Street/Muppet experience. John Kennedy who does Mel has done Animal in several Muppet productions. David Rudman is the source of Baby Bear on Sesame Street and voices Cookie Monster on Play With Me Sesame.

The show gets a thumbs up in our house. While it doesn’t rate the must-see status that Go Diego Go or Little Einstein’s receive, it is well received. The songs are catchy and not annoying - so far. Plus the inclusion of Laurie Berkner gives it credibility. While the show does preach music and movement and dancing, my kids tend not to participate in the dancing for the most part.

Other bloggers tend to support the show as well. Modern Day Dad is a fan, as is Mean Teacher.

The initial block of shows contains 13 episodes. It can be seen at 12:30pm and 4:30pm on Noggin.
